The National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code put out by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states the provisions for installing a commercial fire alarm system. This code does not state when a fire or detection system is required, however; that job is part of the NFPA Life Safety Code. The NFPA Life Safety Code states when you are required to install commercial fire alarm systems  or fire detection systems. This code not only specifies when you have to install one of these systems, it also specifies which criteria the alarm must operate under.

Smoke Detector Requirements Per The NFPA Life Safety Code

The NFPA Life Safety Code states if your smoke detector is only used for an elevator recall or your heat detectors are only in place to shutdown an elevators power then they are not required to activate your buildings commercial fire alarm system. These same detectors do not need to activate the alarm system if their sole purpose is to close or shut down dampers on the HVAC. Another instance where your detectors are not required to activate commercial fire alarm systems is when they are used for closing automatic doors. While under these situations the detectors are not required to activate the alarm system, they must send a signal to an attended location.

Disabling Fire Alarm Systems

Under the NFPA Life Safety Code, there are only two reasons commercial fire alarm systems do not have to be activated throughout the entire property. One reason would be if you own a high-rise building or a large shopping center. These two types of property would require zoned evacuation as total evacuation would not be possible.

The other reason where you would not be required to activate a system throughout the entire property would be if you operate an institution such as a jail, health-care facility, or prison. These facilities have their own set of compliances through the Life Safety Code. In the healthcare field, the code is generally set up with ‘code’ calls, such as “Code Red” announced over the PA system so staff knows what situation they are dealing with.

There are also problems when audible and visual alarms are placed in stairwells. These devices create excessive visual distractions and are incredibly loud. When located in tall buildings with stair wells constructed of hard surfaces, these lights and sounds become unbearable during evacuations.
